Considering that you buy/win items and so your total skills change a lot even during a single day i find this idea rather good.
For example if someone wants to have more strength in total than stamina but finds an item very good (for example it gives him +30 stats) wich changes that "plan" he is in dilemma what to do.
If the change of basic stats was possible(for a price of course) that would solve the problem.
